  7. Salt Water Pool Problems: • Salt in the pool: For any salt water pool system to work, hundreds of pounds of salt must be added to the pool which raises TDS (total dissolved solids).

  8. Salt Problem: • 1. Corrosion: Salt is corrosive. Salt in the pool creates corrosion on pool equipment, pipes, faux rock, ladders, etc. Salt also impacts landscaping and decking causing unsightly residue and damage to both deck and plants.

  9. Salt Problem: • 2. Conductivity: Salt water conducts electricity much better than fresh water. Stray electrical currents can move through the water causing electrolysis and damaging metal parts of the equipment. It can even cause serious injury or death.   10. Problem: • 3. Total Dissolved Solids: Salt in the pool increases the TDS. If the TDS are too high, staining and reduced activity of pool chemicals can result. According to some authorities, the acceptable level for TDS is 1,500 ppm. Most salt water pools need 3,000 to 6,000 ppm of salt in the water.

  11. Salt Problem: • 4. Environment: Some counties prohibit draining salt water pools because the salt kills fish and marine life and cannot be easily removed from the water. • See Link:

  12. Salt Problem: • 5. Salt Concentration: Low concentration of salt makes the production of chlorine inefficient. Dow Chemical, Clorox, etc. have done the research on the most efficient way to produce chlorine. They use tap water to make a brine solution in which to submerge their cells.

  13. The brine solution requires less voltage and makes the system substantially more efficient. They also use an ion selective membrane between the cathode and anode which separates the chemical reactions of each electrode. (Note: None of the salt in the pool systems use the above technology that the big chemical companies use.)

  14. Problem: • B. The long filter time: Salt water pool systems have an inline cell which means chlorine can only be produced when the filter is running.

  15. The low salt concentration means the chlorine production is not as efficient as it could be, so more filtering time is needed. Also, because of the mineral build-up on the electrodes, the anode and cathode cannot be too close together. This further compromises cell efficiency. (More filter time equals more electrical cost and more wear and tear on the pool equipment.)

  16. Problem: • C. pH: With a salt water pool, all the chemicals produced end up in the pool which drives the pH to the alkaline side so acid has to be continually added to keep the water balanced. Managing pH is a major chore with a salt water pool system.

  17. Problem: • D. Cleaning the cell: The cathode side of all chlorine generators attract hard water chemicals and have to be acid washed or cleaned.

  18. Pool water is always harder than tap water. Because salt water pool systems use pool water in their cells, their cells have to be removed and cleaned often.

  19. Reversing Polarity… • Some salt water pool systems reverse the polarity in an attempt to reduce the problem of deposits on cells but reversing polarity shortens the life of the cells causing more frequent costly cell replacement.

  20. Reversing Polarity… • Reversing the polarity also removes flakes of minerals from the Cathode and puts them into the pool, creating unsightly debris in the bottom of the pool. This is is especially apparent in dark colored pools.
