  5. Lesson One What is the BIBLE?

Key Text - 2 Timothy 3:14-17 14 You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. Key Text - 2 Peter 3:14-16 14 Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless, 15 and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you, 16 as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction. Key Text - 2 Peter 1:16-21 16 For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such an utterance as this was made to Him by the Majestic Glory, “This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased” 18 and we ourselves heard this utterance made from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. 19 So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts. 20 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, 21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.   10. AuthorityAccording to John 1:1 the word of God is God Himself. Therefore no other source can be appealed to for proof of its authority. Nothing can validate God’s word, His word validates all nature and existence. The bible is not a book about God it is the very word of God. Lesson One - What is the BIBLE?

AuthorityAuthorities such as historical reliability, internal consistency, fulfilled prophecies, literary influence, beauty and wisdom are helpful in developing reasonableness of the bible but are not sufficient in developing belief of the bible as the living word of God.   18. Clarity according to Wayne Grudem, the main obstacles that prevent people from understanding the word are as followed; Lack of faith Lack of understanding Lack of spiritual formation hardness of heart Lesson One - What is the BIBLE?

  19. Clarity Fundamental truth: scripture that is understandable regardless of the context. Prophetic truth: Scripture that is understandable only in regard to its revelation. Lesson One - What is the BIBLE?

  26. Sufficiency the bible is sufficient for, doctrine, ethics moral teaching and beliefs. Lesson One - What is the BIBLE?

  27. Sufficiency we are not to add prohibitions or undue liberties to the bible in areas where we believe the bible is not precise enough. Lesson One - What is the BIBLE?

  28. Sufficiency we are warned in Rev. 22:18,19 of the penalty of removing or adding to the word of God. Lesson One - What is the BIBLE?

  29. Sufficiency Teaching what the bible says is Doctrine. Teaching personal preference shrouded with the bible is Dogma. Lesson One - What is the BIBLE?

  30. Sufficiency Many differences that have divided churches and denominations are issues that the bible places little emphasis on...One should, therefore exhibit humble hesitancy in placing more emphasis on many of these issues than the bible does. Lesson One - What is the BIBLE?
