Middle East Tensions • Great Britain ruled Palestine after WWII • When tensions flared they decided to split it into two states • One for Jews, One for Arabs • Arabs rejected the proposal • The proposal was a victory for Zionism • Jewish homeland in Palestine • When British forces withdrew, Jews declared the new state of Israel • Truman and Stalin recognized the new nation immediately

Middle East Tensions • The Arabs did not recognize Israel • Wanted Palestine to remain an Arab country • Arab armies attacked Israel, which the Jews defended with money from the American-Jewish community • Two UN mediators were sent to resolved the dispute • The 2nd was Ralph Bunche who won the Noble Prize for his efforts • Arab countries still refused to recognize Israel • Displaced civilians

Communist Victory in China • KMT (Chiang Kai-shek) fought against the Chinese Communists in the early forces • Eventually joined forces to fight against the Japanese • Chiang broke the truce, but this allowed the Japanese to take parts of Manchuria • Chiang was kidnapped by the KMT and forced to join with the Communists to fight the Japanese • During WWII popular support increased for Mao Zedong and the Chinese Communists

  5. US Reaction • US did not want China to become Communist • US took measures to keep KMT in control • Chiang Kai-shek was a poor and unresponsive leader • Mao had most of China under control by 1949 • Chiang retreated to Taiwan • US recognized the Nationalists until 1971

A Tale of Two Koreas • Korea had been divided into two parts after WWII • Divided at the 38th parallel • Soviets in the north, Americans in the south • Both Koreas laid claim to the country by setting up governments • Communists were led by Kim Il Sung • Southern Republic led by Syngman Rhee • US built up South Korean military and the North was built up by the Soviets

A Tale of Two Koreas • North Korea invades the South in 1950 • Dean Acheson had given the “defensive perimeter” speech earlier that year • This perimeter did not include Korea, hence the assumption the US would not intervene • UN calls for a cease-fire • Soviets were boycotting • UN members coming to S. Koreas aid

  8. A Tale of Two Koreas • North Korea dominated the UN and US forces under the command of MacArthur • In an extremely short amount of time almost all of S. Korea had been lost • MacArthur launched a counter attack • Success! Chased all the way through N. Korea to the Chinese border • China entered the war and the US was pushed back to the 38th parallel

  9. Great Debate • MacArthur wanted an expansion of the war • Thought he could put an end to Communism in China and N. Korea • Truman thought this would lead to WWIII • MacArthur spoke out against Truman • Truman removed MacArthur from his post • War reached a stalemate and American lives were piling up • The election of 1952 was on the horizon
