  2. Classical Opera • Opera buffa, opera comique, Singspiel, ballad opera • Lighter subjects, simplicity, naturalness • Sung in the language of the people • Opera seria • Written to “show off” the star

Parts of an opera • Overture • Orchestral piece played BEFORE the opera begins • Abridged sonata-allegro form • Uses themes from opera and sets mood • Recitative (secco vs. accompanied) • Sing-song like “patter” which helped to move the story line along • Aria (song) • Sung for emotional expression
