  2. Minor Exercise Related • Muscle Cramp • Sudden spasm or tightening of a muscle • Strain • Condition in which muscles have been overworked • Sprain • An injury to tissues surrounding a joint

  3. R.I.C.E • Rest- Avoid using the affected muscle or joint. • Ice- Put ice on the area for 20 min. then off for 20 min and then on again. • Compression- light pressure on the effected area to reduce swelling. • Elevation- Raise the effected area above the heart to reduce swelling.

  4. Major Exercise Related Injuries • Fracture • Break in the bone • Usually requires immobilization • Dislocations • Bone slips from it’s normal position in a joint. • Must be immobilized

  5. Major injuries (cont.) • Tendinitis • Tendons being stretched or torn from over use. • Rest and physical therapy. • Blows to the heads • Swelling of the brain. • Unconsciousness. • Death.

  6. Hot Weather Related • Usually caused from overexertion (overworking the body) or dehydration. • Heat Cramps • Muscle spasms that are the result of loss of large amounts of salt and water through perspiration. • Drink plenty of water.

  7. Hot Weather (cont.) • Heat exhaustion • An overheating of the body resulting in cold, clammy skin and symptoms of shock. • Dizziness • Headache • Shortness of breath • Nausea

  8. Hot weather (cont.) • Heatstroke • Body loses its ability to rid itself of excessive heat through perspiration. • Rise in body temperature. • Difficulty breathing. • Sudden collapse. • Call for help immediately • Move person to cool place and sponge with cool water.

  9. Cold Weather • Frostbite- Condition that results when body tissue becomes frozen.

  10. Cold Weather • Hypothermia- a condition in which body temperature becomes dangerously low. • Long exposure to windy and rainy weather can cause Hypothermia. • Brain stops functioning properly. • Body symptoms shut down. • Death • Person my act disoriented and lose motor control.

  11. Safety • Be aware of people around you. • Play at your skill level. • Obeying rules and restrictions. • Accepting responsibility for your own safety.

  12. Personal Safety • Choose a well lit area • Choose a well used park • Wear a whistle • Use proper equipment
