Four Programs GoalsNational, State and Local • Preventing the initiation of tobacco use among young people. • Promoting quitting among young people and adults. • Eliminating nonsmokers' exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS). • Identifying and eliminating the disparities related to tobacco use and its effects among different population groups.

Long Term Planning… …With Short term indicators • Death and disease are the ultimate outcomes tobacco prevention is trying to reduce • However interventions are not immediately apparent in tobacco prevention • Multiple points exist prior to death or disability that will predict reductions • Nearly an infinite amount actually

Types of Data • Qualitative • Provides information in a more narrative format on individual thoughts and feelings • Attempts to answer the How and Why • Small intimate data collection method • Quantitative • Provides information on the number of units within the sampling frame • Attempts to answer the What, When, and Where of situations • Larger removed data collection method Methods Exist to convert Qualitative information into a more Qualitative Presentation

  8. Surveys • Sampling Frame • The sampling frame of a survey is the pool of potential subjects from which the survey participants are sampled. Examples include the Kansas population, all youth in specific grades, Business owners, Physicians, and cities • The information collected has a different interpretation based on who is sampled and what questions are being asked of them. Asking someone about their personal habits is different than asking a business owner about their workplace policy

Surveys – Adult Kansans • Kansas Adult Tobacco Survey • Periodically conducted • Generalizable information to the State of Kansas and some sub-state analysis • Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System • Conducted annually • Core used to produce prevalence estimates • State Added or Optional Modules available

  11. Surveys - Youth • Kansas Youth Tobacco Survey • Conducted every two years • Random sample of youth in grades 6-12 • Kansas Communities That Care • Conducted annually • Invitation extended to all youth in Kansas in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12
