  1. Continues Cognitive and Vital Signs Monitor Design Review

  2. Problem Description • Elderly people who live alone face a unique set of problems • Increased risk of falling and not being able to call for help • Deteriorating physical and cognitive state due to lack of activity and stimulation • Deteriorating sleep quality

  3. Problem Description • Family members and caregivers often cannot address these issues due to various reasons • It may be impossible to assign a caregiver 24/7 • Physical distance • Lack of information • Lack of time

  4. Proposed Solution • Continues Cognitive and Vital Signs Monitor will provide the elderly people’s family members and caregivers an up to date and comprehensive information on their well being • All the data will be available for viewing on a mobile interface and

  5. Proposed Solution • An emergency detection system will identify falls and distress and notify a preconfigured list of caregivers that the user may need help automatically Alert Alert

  6. Proposed Solution • Cognitive and vital signs monitor will keep track of the user’s sleep quality, physical activity levels and mental activity levels, and make this data available for family members and caregivers, thus enabling early diagnosis of various problems: • Short or fragmented sleep • Low levels of physical activity • Low levels of cognitive stimulation

  7. Proposed Solution • Caregivers will have the option to define additional alerts for: • Wake up/sleep time • Measurements rise above or drop below a certain threshold • Every reading will have an associated GPS Coordinates to assist in locating disoriented users

  8. Proposed Solution • Collected data: • Drops detection (Accelerometer) • Physical activity level and body position (Accelerometer) • Heart rate (Pulse Oximeter) • Cognitive state and sleep time (EEG) • GPS coordinates (Mobile phone GPS) • All the data but the GPS will be collected using a sensors belt and transmitted to the user’s mobile phone via Bluetooth

  9. Database Mobile Application Server Background Service Sensors Web GUI Mobile UI GPS Proposed Solution • Architecture

  10. Proposed Solution

  11. Proposed Solution • Tools and infrastructure • Android SDK • Eclipse IDE • Oracle database • Grails

  12. Uses outside the problem domain • Hikers in areas that have cellular communication • Personal safety monitor • Tracking one’s physical health • Missing persons locator • Monitoring multiple patients

  13. Expected Deliverables • Deliverables • A unified sensors belt • Mobile application • Web interface • Potential intellectual property • Analysis algorithms

  14. Competing Solutions • Well-being and fitness monitors • Zeo – Sleep quality monitor • FitBit – Activity and sleep quality monitor • Fitness monitors exist in abundance • Automatic falls detection • iFall android app • AlarmNet sensors • Pioneer Auto Fall Guard

  15. Competing Solutions • Distinguishing factors • Fall detection, activity, cognitive and heart rate measurements combined • GPS readings for tracking a disoriented user • Uses mobile phone for communication – can be traveled with • Does not require a designated call center

  16. Users Characterization • Initial group of users: elderly people, their family members and caregivers • General group of users: people who are concerned with their well-being and personal safety

  17. Financial Model • The users will need to purchase the sensors belt and a monthly subscription for the service
