I. Treaty of Paris • Treaty • December 10, 1898 US and Spain signed the Treaty of Paris which included 3 major points • Granted independence to Cuba • Ceded Puerto Rico and Guam to the United States • Ceded the Philippines to the US
I. Treaty of Paris • Debate • Senate had to ratify the treaty in order for it to take effect. • Many disapproved of American imperialism A. Imperialism – empire building • Opponents formed the Anti-Imperialist League A. Anti-Imperialist League – felt that imperialism was hostile to liberty.

III. Cuba • Military Rule • Although Cuba had been granted it’s independence, the US felt responsible for restoring order. • US ruled Cuba under military rule for 4 years. Eventually Cubans began to resent the USA.

Hawaii • Annexation • Sugar plantations on the Hawaiian Islands led to American sugar planters to push for annexation. • Queen Liliuokalani felt that the true enemy was the Americans. • After conflict over the morality of annexation, eventually Hawaii became an American territory in 1845 and an official state in 1959.
