  3. Safe Surrender vs. Adoption Adoption is the best option for a parent who is unable to care for a child. Adoption allows the child’s parents to: • Participate in the adoption process • Share important medical information related to their child • Select a religion for their child • Decide whether or not they want to maintain contact with the child and adoptive parents

Social and Psychological Aspects of Child Abandonment While parents who abandon or safely surrender their children do not fit a general profile, some common characteristics of these individuals include: • Denial/Concealment of pregnancy • Lack of a support system for the mother • Fear of “the system” • Fear that friends and relatives will find out • Lack of prenatal care • Lack of typical pregnancy symptoms • Childbirth occurs outside of the hospital

  6. Assisting a Woman Who Conceals Her Pregnancy What can you do: • Ask her if she is pregnant • Acknowledge the pregnancy in a non-judgmental manner • Help her determine her options • Assist her in finding prenatal health care • Provide love and emotional support
