  2. Mission Statement “To provide a warm welcome to Worcester Public Schools students who arrive from other countries with significant academic gaps. Our school goal is to teach English Language Learners not only the English language, but also academic and social skills, which will promote successful future academic and social endeavors in their home schools. ”

  4. School Goals • Students will do well in school. • Students will do better on tests. • Students will learn to work with others.

  5. Elementary Program • Grades 3 through 6 • Day begins at 8:25 am and ends 2:30pm • Extra areas of study include art, gym, music drama and health

  6. Secondary Program • Grades 7 through 12 • Day begins at 7:45 am and extends through 2:10 pm • Piloting a new transportation program with the Worcester public transportation system • Secondary Program students have same electives as their Elementary Program peers

  7. NCC and Worcester Vocational High School • Partnership to provide a non-traditional classroom skill set by studying culinary arts • Students take part in a 54-hour culinary arts certification program

  8. School Partnership Cont. Automotive and Collision Repair • Designed to give students real life job skills. • Have to pass safety regulations and standards.

  10. Individualization • Student to Teacher Ratio 20:1 • Course work can be catered to the expertise and exposure of the student • With the focus on student progress

  11. Flexibility • Courses are all guided by the Massachusetts curriculum frameworks • Students can be transferred to different class levels depending on their progress • Dynamic style of education allows for a more accelerated learning program

  12. Academic Scaffolding • Teachers and students work together to develop strategies that promote success • Build on the knowledge that students have to • Accelerate their English skills • Increase their content learning

  13. Team-Teaching • Used to help address the diversity of learning experiences and languages in the classroom • Consult together on curriculum development, student progress, and analyze student performance to determine, through consensus proper and appropriate placement for each student

  14. Team-Teaching cont. • Teachers work together to • Decide how to maximize students abilities • Determine the best techniques to meet the needs of all students • Examine progress of students • A cohesive team approach is a key element in the implementation of these strategies

  15. Personal Support • Students at the NCC often come from a background of trauma • This may have led to significant interruptions in their formal education • Teachers work to create an atmosphere of acceptance and safety • Fostering a sense of self worth and pride in the students own abilities

  16. Accountability • English Language Proficiency Benchmarks and Outcomes (ELPBO). • Work within the constraints of the Massachusetts curriculum framework. • All students are expected to gain and use higher order thinking skills. • To best prepare students to pass all mandatory exams.

  17. The New Citizens Center • Continuous 15 year program • 2008 first year for the program in its own building • Students from over 30 countries speaking more then 14 languages • 1st program of its kind in the state

PBIS • A system of rewarding good behavior Tickets are used for rewarding specific types of behavior • Green- Reward for good social skills. • Ex- Holding the door for another student. • Blue- Reward for demonstration of retained knowledge. • Ex- Student shows great progress on a spelling test.

  20. PBIS Rewards Goal- Students to accrue 50 tickets in one PBIS period ( roughly 1 month in length). Rewards - Field Trips - Movie Days - Special Items purchasable with earned tickets.

  21. Second Step • “Violence prevention program that integrates social and emotional learning with academics” • “Students learn vital social skills, such as empathy, emotion management, problem solving, and cooperation.”

  22. Final Goal • To be able to instill in our students three major skill sets • Academic Skills • Social Skills • English Proficiency Skills • And to finally transition students to their home schools.
