  1. World War II • A world war is a war affecting most of the world's countries. • On September 1st 1939, Germany invaded Poland without warning, sparking the start of World War Two. • By the evening of September 3rd, Britain and France were at war with Germany and within a week, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa had also joined the war. • World War II lasted for 6 years from 1939 to 1945 and between 60 to 70 million people died in it, making it the deadliest war in world history .

  2. Why Japan went to war? • Japan was not a nation blessed with many natural resources. • In order to secure those additional raw materials, such as rubber, tin, and petroleum, among others, the leaders decided that conquest of other nations was a solution . • While the European countries were fighting their war, their British colonies in Southeast Asia were not well-protected and Japan took the opportunity to attack the countries in Southeast Asia.

  3. Attack on Pearl Harbour • On November 26, 1941, a fleet of six japanese aircraft carriers left Japan, headed for Pearl Harborin Hawaii. • Together they had a total of 441 planes, including fighters, torpedo-bombers, dive-bombers, and fighter-bombers. The planes attacked in two waves, sinking several battleships and claiming the lives of some 2 400 Americans on 7 Dec 1941. • The attack was made so that USA would not send its warships to stop Japan from attacking the countries in Southeast Asia. www.isuart.net

  4. Singapore Naval Base • It is situated in Sembawang at the northern tip of Singapore . • It was finally completed in 1938. The floating dock, 275 meters long, was the third largest in the world . It was defended by artillery, searchlights, and the newly built nearby Tengah Airfield. Above-ground tanks held enough fuel for the entire British navy for six months • The only thing the giant naval fortress lacked was warships! • It did not have any as Britain decided that their warships would be based in Britain and would only sail to Singapore to protect the British colonies in Southeast Asia when they were threatened.

  5. False Sense of Security? • The British felt that Singapore, with its gun positions, military airfields and naval base, was so strong that it would not be defeated. The British also thought that enemy soldiers would find it difficult to move through the thick jungles of Malaya to reach Singapore • At the same time, the people in Singapore had confidence that the British were able to defend the island. They did not do much to prepare for war.

  6. REFLECTIONS AND FURTHER DISCUSSION

  7. Reflections - Important Lessons to learn WE • We cannot rely on others to protect us. Only would have the will to defend our own country. www.caricature.com.sg

  8. Emergency preparedness • 1) Familiarise yourself with Public Warning System (PWS) sirens. • 3 types of sirens • pulsating blasts- “important message”, please tune in to radio • Wailing blasts – “air raid/danger”, move to shelter immediately! • Continuous blasts – “the threat is over”, leave the shelter in an orderly manner. www.scdf.gov.sg

  9. Emergency Preparedness • 2) Pack a “Ready Bag”. • It should contain important items that will help you in an emergency. • Every member of your family should know where the Ready Bag is kept. • Pack items like transistor radio, batteries, whistle, first aid kit, special medical supplies, list of emergency numbers, water and food etc). Remember to periodically check the expiry date of perishable item, batteries and replace them when needed. www.westviewprimary.moe.edu.sg

  10. Emergency preparedness? • 3) If you have a household shelter at home, keep it ready at all times. • Do not clutter it with fixtures and shelves, leaving no space for you and your family! • In an emergency, bring along your Ready Bag into the shelter and tune in to the radio for important messages issued by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF)

  11. Emergency preparedness? • 4) If you do not have a CD shelter at home, know your nearest Public CD shelters and move as fast as you can towards it. Eg. HDB basement blocks, underground MRT stations, government buildings. To identify a public shelter, look out for the Civil Defence shelter sign! www.scdf.gov.sg

  12. Emergency preparedness ? • 5) The SCDF publishes a copy of the Emergency Handbook . • Read it and share it with your loved ones. • Keep it in your “Ready Bag” for reference. www.scdf.gov.sg
