Safety Moment:Back Safety and Injury PreventionTerrell Roddy, Safety Committee Chair
Common causes of back injuries include: Poor posture Injured or fatigued muscles Poor muscle endurance or lack of exercise Improper techniques when lifting, pushing, climbing, standing or sitting Poor diet Awkward sleeping positions Stress
How can you prevent back injuries? Pay attention to posture. When standing, balance your weight evenly on your feet. ... Lift properly. When lifting and carrying a heavy object, lift with your legs and tighten your core muscles. ... Modify repetitive tasks. ... Listen to your body. Make sure you have a clear path Use mechanical lifting aids Use team lifting
What is the key to safe lifting? Bend your hips and knees to squat down to your load, keep it close to your body, and straighten your legs to lift. Never lift a heavy object above shoulder level. Avoid turning or twisting your body while lifting or holding a heavy object.
Where is the safe lifting zone? The safe lifting zone is between knees and shoulders. If the load is below knee level - bend your knees and lift with your legs. If the load is above your shoulders - use a stool or ladder.
What should you never do when lifting? Don't lift objects that are too heavy for you. If you attempt to lift something, keep your back straight up and down, head up, and lift with your knees. Keep the object close to you, don't stoop over to lift. Tighten your stomach muscles to keep your back in balance.
