  1. Fail-Safe John Higgins His 262

  2. Synopsis • When a computer malfunction sends a squadron of US bombers on a mission to nuke Moscow, the President and USSAC must work together with Soviet forces to bring them down by any means possible, or face the rapidly approaching reality of total nuclear war.

  3. Cast • Henry Fonda – The President • Dan O’herlihy - Brigadier General Warren Black • Larry Hagman - Buck • Walter Matthau – Prof. Groetschele • Frank Overton – General Bogan • Fritz Weaver – Col. Cascio • Ed Binns – Col. Jack Grady • Russel Hardie – General Stark • Sorrell Booke – Congressman Raskob • Russell Collins – Gordon Knapp • Hildy Parks – Betty Black • Directed by Sidney Lumet

  4. Reviews • The neglect of this masterly Doomsday film is generally attributed to the fact that it came out at the wrong time, shortly after the appearance of Kubrick's "Dr. Strangelove" which somehow caught the viewing public's imagination far more. I find this one of cinema's greatest tragedies, preferring in every way the dark seriousness of Lumet's apocalyptic nightmare to the black comedy of Kubrick's vision which somehow trivialises the subject matter. ~ John Simpson, IMDB • An underseen classic, Fail-Safe is based on a very similar story (though not the same book) as filmcritic.com’s #1 film, Dr. Strangelove. (In fact, Kubrick sued Sidney Lumet and co. over the similarities between the films, before either ever came out.) But Fail-Safe plays it straight, to equally powerful effect. Walter Matthau is a scene stealer, playing a rare serious role as a civilian advisor to the Pentagon who advocates all-out war. Jaw-dropping and tense, despite some rough production values. ~ Christopher Null, Filmcritic.com • My ratings: 4/5 for entertainment, 3/5 for historic accuracy • 8.1/10, 6,985 votes
