The Challenge • One-third of all intersection crashes in the United States, and 40 percent of all fatal crashes, occur at intersections controlled by stop signs.1 • Driver failure to see the stop sign and/or know where to stop are common problems. • City of Winston-Salem sought simple,low-cost safety treatments to increase driver compliance with the stop signs, and reduce the number and severity of crashes at high-crash stop-controlled intersections. 1. Solution Enhanced Stop Signs and Pavement Markings: Larger (30-inch) stop signs with “Stop Ahead” advance traffic control sign and added pavement markings (double-yellow centerline and stop bars) Added pavement markings (double-yellow centerline and stop bars) to existing (24-inch) stop signs Additional and larger (30-inch) stop signs Additional and larger (30-inch) stop signs and added pavement markings (double-yellow centerline and stop bars) 2

Technical Data Location: • 16 high crash locations in the City of Winston-Salem, North Carolina Speed Limits: • Ranged from 25 mph to 45 mph Implementation Cost: • $350: 30-inch stop sign or “Stop Ahead” advance traffic control sign • $1,250: Pavement markings (double-yellow centerline and stop bar) Implementation Time: • 3 months Implementation Issues: • Winston-Salem experienced no implementation issues with these countermeasures. 3

  5. Results at Treated Intersections Average Crash Reductions: • 70% reduction in injuries per year • 55% reduction in total crashes per year • These intersections did not experience a significant number of fatalities. 4
