2. How Did Greece Start? • Greece started when a bird laid an egg. From the egg came Eros, god of love. The top egg flew up and became Uranus, god of the sky. The bottom egg fell down and became Gaea, goddess, of the earth. Uranus and Gaea had many children. These were called Titans. The chief Titan was Cronus, his wife was Rhea. Cronus was hateful. He didn’t want any of his children to replace him as chief, so every time his wife gave birth, he swallowed the baby. But when Zeus was born, Rhea hid him from Cronus. When Zeus grew up and challenged his father, Cronus threw up all his children that he swallowed. They were all adults. They were all gods. They ruled the universe. The greeks believed that these gods lived on top of Mt.Olympus, and they even believed that the most important gods were Olympians, there were 12, they are…………………

3. Zeus Zeus was the king of all gods. He ruled the sky and the earth after his parents. His symbols were the eagle, bull and the oak tree. His weapon was his thunderbolt. He was called the father of gods and men. Zeus was the child of Cronus and Rhea. His brothers are Poseidon and Hades.

4. Poseidon Poseidon was the god of the sea and earthquakes. A horse and bull represents him, and he uses his trident as his weapon (not the gum), his trident is so strong that it can shake the earth. And he was even worshiped by seamen alotso the sea was smooth and safe for them to travel on.

5. Hades Hades is the god of the underworld. He even has a pet, [Cerberus] the three headed dog that guards the underworld. He stole Persephone, the daughter of Demeter and Zeus. Hades doesn't have a throne on Olympus, Persephone and him both sit at the fire like Hestia. He controls the three Fates. He guards the entrance to Tartarus. He is the brother of Hera, Zeus, and Poseidon.

6. Ares Ares is the son of Zeus and Hera. He was disliked by both parents. He is the god of war. His symbol is the dog and vulture. Although there are two gods of war, Athena is strategic war and Ares is bloodshed war. Ares’s eyes go on fire when he gets mad and he can declare war on anything.

7. Apollo Apollo is the son of Zeus and Leto. His twin sister is Artemis. He is the god of music, the sun, light, healing, and truth. He shoots with a silver bow. One of Apollo's more important daily tasks is to harness his chariot with four horses an drive the sun across the sky. His tree was the laurel, the crow his bird, the dolphin his animal.

8. Hermes Hermes was the son of Zeus. His wand, winged sandals and his winged helmet are his symbols. Hermes uses his wand [Caduceus] to defend himself, it can control human, transform objects into gold and it can channel magical energies. Hermes was also Zeus’s secret agent, he was also the fastest god. He was god of trade, thievery, language, education, home, athletics, travel and luck.

9. Hephaestus Hephaestus was Zeus’s son and was throne off of Mt.Olympus because Zeus thought he was so ugly, some of his sisters helped him back on Mt.Olympus by teaching him to be a blacksmith. When he grew up, he was the god of technology and fire. His symbols were fire and a blacksmith’s hammer. He made many great weapons and armor for the gods that some of them use it as there symbol.

10. Hera Hera was the queen of all goddesses. She was the goddess of marriage. Her symbols were the peacock and a cow. She could turn the meanest people, to the sweetest. She was called the mother of goddesses and women. Hera was the child of Cronus and Rhea.

Athena Athena was born in full greek armor from the forehead of her father Zeus - according to one story, this is because he swallowed her mother, Metis, while she was pregnant with Athena Athena and her uncle, the sea god Poseidon, competed for the affections of the Greeks, each providing one gift to the nation. Poseidon provided salt-water spring rising from the slopes of the Acropolis, but Athena provided the olive tree, giving shade, oil, and olives. The Greeks preferred her gift more than Poseidon’s and named the city after her.

12. Artemis She was goddess of the hunt, the moon, and the natural environment. Artemis is the daughter of Zeus and Leto. She is the lady of the wild things. She is the huntsman of the gods. She is the protector of the young. Like Apollo she hunts with silver arrows. All wild animals are scared to her, especially the deer.

13. Aphrodite Aphrodite is the goddess of love, desire and beauty. There are two myths of her birth. The other goes back to when Cronus had tossed Aphrodite into the sea. She then arose from the sea foam on a giant scallop and walked to shore in Cyprus.

14. Hestia Hestia has no children, unlike most greek gods. Fire is her symbol. She was the goddess of home and hearth. Hestia even does your duty, taking care of things. Even though she is not in very many stories, she was actually a pretty important goddess, who was worshipped at home, as part of the ritual of lighting a fire or moving into a new house, or getting married. And she’s so calm that she doesn't have a weapon.
