Mexico invite American settlers to Texas • Comache and Apache • Swept though Texas and terrorized Mexican settlements and stole livestock that supported many American settlers. • Mexico wants to improve economy • They eased trade restrictions and made trade with the United States • Mexico and the northern provinces started to trade together, including: New Mexico, California, Texas, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah.exican settlers or Tejanos.Mexico

Cont. • Strengthening ties • The Native Americans continued to threatened the Mexican Settlers • Mexico wanted to strengthen ties. • Mexican government encouraged American farmers to settle in Texas • Mexico offer empresarios to the American Settlers • One of the most successful empresarios was Steven Austin

  4. Texas rebels against Mexican government • The Anglo’s and Mexican government differed over multiply ideas • Slavery • Language difference • Many of the settlers were cotton/ sugar farmers that brought slave • Mexico abolished slavery in 1824 • Mexico said the farmers could not have slaves.

  5. Cont. • In 1830 Mexico tried to seal it borders and have heavy taxes on goods from America • Despite there efforts Anglo population doubled • In 1835 Austin colony won an appeal to allow immigration again

Battle at the Alamo • Austin had argued with Santa Anna for self-government for Texas, but didn’t succeed. • Late in 1835, the Texans attacked. • Mexican forces were driven to the Alamo. • Santa Anna then went north-ward; defeated and destroyed the small American garrison. All 187 U. S. defenders died

  7. Cont. • Six weeks after the defeat of the Alamo, on April 21, • The Texans struck back. • The Battle of San Jacinto Sam Houston, • they defeated Santa Anna • Shouts of “Remember the Alamo!” • The Texans killed 630 of Santa Anna’s soldiers in 18 minutes and captured Santa Anna
