Do Now • Why do you think historians would name an era The Middle Ages? • It fell in the middle of ancient times and modern times Ancient Greek and Roman Times Middle Ages Renaissance BCE ----------------0------------CE----------------------500--------------------------------------------1492--------------------- • The Dark Ages? • No new learning, The Bubonic Plague (Black Death) • What do you think is the meaning behind the word Medieval? -it is from the Latin: medium aevum; meaning middle ages

  3. So, what started it all? The Fall of the Roman Empire • Caused a period of wars throughout Europe • People were forced to create walled towns known as manors or fiefs

  4. The Manor or fief • Self sufficient, walled town • owned by a wealthy lord (land lord) • people who lived there paid him for protection • Townspeople created shops and villages, • peasants farmed the land for the lord

Feudalism • System where people work for and on the lord’s land in exchange for his protection. • The King grants land to nobles (lords) & in exchange they provide soldiers to fight for him. • Peasants, called serfs, work the land for the lord. • Based on a strict hierarchy (ranking system) of social classes.
