Goals • Register new voters • Update existing registrations • Educate citizens about the elections process, deadlines, etc. NC State Board of Elections
Get Organized • Request forms. • 500 or less from county board • 500 plus from SBOE. There is a request form online at www.sboe.state.nc.us • Educate your volunteers • Get supplies • Pens, Clip Boards, Highlighters • Be Festive (flags, buttons, etc.) NC State Board of Elections
Responsibilities • Provide current form • Allow voter to complete the form • Answer general questions • Review the form for completeness • Return form to appropriate county board NC State Board of Elections
What Not to Do (by law) • Coerce, threaten or intimidate • Alter or change a completed form • Partially fill out the form (unless applicant is aware and does not object) • Fail to deliver form by registration deadline • Sell or attempt to sell a completed voter registration form NC State Board of Elections
What Not to Do (Suggested) • Be too political. You should offer service to the entire voting public. Be respectful. Certainly, you can’t coerce or intimidate anyway. • Refuse to accept a form. No global policy that you will only register ______. However, if you feel that you are not going to deliver the form, then don’t take it. • Guess! If you don’t know the answer to a question, give applicant the form and encourage him to contact CBE or SBOE. NC State Board of Elections
Consequences • A prospective voter may be disenfranchised • Organizer could be charged with a Class 2 Misdemeanor NC State Board of Elections
Voter Qualifications • Ask if applicant is a US Citizen • Ask if applicant will be 18 by November 4th • Ask if applicant lives in NC and will they have been resident of county, precinct for 30 day by November 4th. (Must have moved on or before October 5th). NC State Board of Elections
Voter Qualifications • Can’t be registered to vote elsewhere • If convicted of a felony, then citizenship rights must be restored (Not serving active sentence, on probation or on parole. NC State Board of Elections

General Election Calendar • October 10th – Deadline to Register • October 16th – One Stop Begins • October 28th – Mail-in Absentee Requests Due by 5:00 pm • November 1st – One Stop Ends • November 3rd – Mail-in Absentees due by 5:00 pm • November 4th NC State Board of Elections
