  1. South 4 Immersion Bathing Project: Where are we today?

Objectives • Determine frequency of immersion bathing • Assess status of transition to bedside admission and bathing for newborns • Examine data to determine what factors may inhibit or impede admission and immersion bathing at parents’ bedside • Discuss how practice supports family-centered care

  3. Methods • Data collection occurred from March 15th, 2010 through April 15th, 2010 • Staff asked to record basic information regarding initial newborn bath, including: • Time, location, type of bath, role of bather, type of delivery, pre- and post-bath temperature of infant • No identifying information collected • If temperatures or type of bath missing, data point discarded

  5. Baths by Type Total Baths Recorded: N = 139 – represents 73.5% of all deliveries during this 30 day time period – GREAT JOB, STAFF!!! Total Immersion Baths: N = 84 – 60.4% 0f all baths given Total Sponge Baths: N= 55 – 39.6% of all baths given

  7. Type of Bath Given by Shift Immersion: Days – 91.1 % Evenings – 57.1% Nights - 14.7% Sponge: Days - 8.9% Evenings - 42.9% Nights - 85.3%

Benefits of Minimal Separation for the Couplet Admitting and bathing the baby at the parents’ bedside accomplishes several things: • Teaching opportunity with parents • Minimizes separation of baby from parents • Reinforces idea that this is THEIR baby – not expected that baby will “go to the nursery” • Helps support AAP recommendation that healthy, full-term newborns remain in skin-to-skin contact with mother, with minimal interruptions for “routine” tasks, during first hour of life, or until first breastfeeding occurs.

  10. Potential Barriers to This Practice • Time • Equipment – More Tubs in accessible places? • Personnel & Patient Assignment • Workflow • Habit • Convenience • Lack of Staff Buy-In
