The conflict in the Pacific during World War II saw dramatic turns, from early Japanese victories in Guam, Wake Island, and the Philippines to significant Allied responses. January 1942 marked Japan's invasion of Manila, leading to brutal treatments of prisoners, including the infamous Bataan Death March. However, the Allies sought revenge, launching the Doolittle Raid and winning pivotal battles, including the Battle of Coral Sea and the Battle of Midway, where U.S. codebreakers overturned Japanese plans. Gradually, the tide turned, establishing the Allied strategy of island hopping, culminating in victories at Guadalcanal and Leyte Gulf, reasserting control over the Pacific.
