Standard Industrial Classification • Developed in early 1900 • Used to identify a firm’s primary business activity • SIC codes are four digit number • SIC was based on concepts developed when manufacturing, and not services, dominate the American economy.
North American Industrial Classification System • Developed 1997 • Used to identify a firm’s primary business activity • NAICS can be up to six digits • In 2004, NAICS codes became the only codes used
