George Washington Review • First President, from Virginia • VP: John Adams • Events in office: • Whiskey Rebellion • Capitol moves to Washington DC (surveyed by Washington) • Establishes National Bank (Hamilton) • Proclamation of Neutrality (not getting involved with war between France and Britain) • Jay Treaty – Britain agrees to vacate North America permanently • Precedents: created the Cabinet, title - Mr. President, stepped down after two terms, farewell address

John Adams Review • 2nd President, from Massachusetts • VP: Thomas Jefferson • Events in office: • French Revolution (we don’t help) • Created the Navy • Alien & Sedition Acts – restrictions on citizenship; makes it illegal to publically criticize the government (ANTI- FIRST AMENDMENT!) • Midnight judges – appoints hundreds of Federalist (political party) judges to federal positions right before he leaves office • Jefferson forms a new party, Democratic-Republicans to combat big government policies
