  5. Intro Questions • Why do we need to know about geography? • How will we use maps in every day life?

  6. Four Basic Components • Title - Purpose of the map • Compass Rose- Shows where the cardinal directions (north, south, east, and west) lie on a map • Legend/Key - Tells the user about the symbols on a map • Scale - Tells the user the ratio between distances on the map and actual distances on Earth

  8. Latitude: measures distances north or south of the Equator Longitude: measures distances east or west of Prime Meridian

  10. Locations • Absolute Location Exact point where something is located on the Earth (latitude and longitude) ex. Washington, D.C. is 76N 39W • Relative Location Where one place is in relation to another place (north, south, east, and west) ex. Washington, D.C. is southeast of Ashburn
