  2. Law of Superposition • The oldest layer is at the bottom and the youngest layer is at the top.

  3. Law of Crosscutting - In a series of horizontal sedimentary beds, if there is an inclusion which cuts vertically through them, it must be younger than the sediment beds.

  4. Law of Inclusions - The intruding rock (Rock A) must have been there first to provide the fragments in the younger rock (Rock B)

  5. Law of Unconformities • A gap in the geological record that is formed by erosion of an area.

  6. Law of Uniformitarianism • the natural processes operating in the past are the same as those that can be observed operating in the present. • "The present is the key to the past."
