  1. Road to War- 2nd hour Rebuilding the German Military • When Hitler became chancellor he secretly began rebuilding the military he openly shared his plans to rebuild the military feeling that no one would oppose him. European leaders were not willing to fight him • He said that he did this to stop the spread of communism-used communism as an excuse to rebuild military • Started building U-Boats and war ships

  2. Militarizing the Rhineland • Hitler placed troops in the Rhineland defying the treaty. • Germany did not like what they could not do in their country and France and Great Britain were very concerned with this activity. • Hitler used the excuse of Soviet and French threat to Germany

  3. Road to War-4th hour Rebuilding the German Military • 1933 rebuilt military in secret/eventually shared publicly, Plan violated Treaty of Versailles • Britain allowed him to build U-boats and warships, France and England took no direct action • Claimed the military buildup was to stop communism but was planning war against neighboring countries

  4. Militarizing the Rhineland • Hitler defied the Treaty and put military presence in the Rhineland 1936, Britain and France complained but no action was taken • Hitler said he did this because of a threat by French and Soviet agreement • The German troops remained in the Rhineland and Hitler grew bolder

  5. Annexing Austria • Anschluss= connection between Austria and Germany, Hitler did this in 1938 • Defied the treaty of Versailles • The World, again did not respond

  6. Growing Crisis • Czechoslovakia, newly formed, had a lot of German speaking people (Sudetenland-wanted to be part of Germany) • French and British leaders chose not to get in Hitler’s way (Appeasement of Hitler- Munich Agreement) • Winston Churchill spoke out against Chamberlin’s plans

  7. Road to War- 5th hour Rebuilding the German Military • Hitler claimed he was building German strength to resist the threat of Communism • Violated the treaty of Versailles but was unchallenged by the League of Nations/World • Planned to use the military to expand and build a German Empire

Militarizing the Rhineland • Hitler defied the treaty of Versailles and put small armed forces in the Rhineland 1936 • Hitler claimed military forces were necessary because of a threat of Soviet/French military agreement • Britain and France complained about the German forces but did nothing in response

  9. Annexing Austria • Anschluss=German/Austrian connection forbidden by the Treaty of Versailles • German’s/Hitler walked into Austria unopposed adding to German territory

  10. A Growing Crisis • Hitler was angry that Germans lived under Czechoslovakian rule in Sudetenland • Appeasement of Hitler at the Munich Confernece (Munich Agreement) gave Germany Sudetenland • Prime Minister Chamberlin came home to a hero’s welcome, Hitler then took over the rest of Czechoslovakia
