  1. Monday, February 7th, 2011 Geography: BRAZIL IN: VIDEO Describe the Amazon Basin River region of Brazil in a 10 word GIST. Content Objective: Students will research & interpret multiple viewpoints on issues that shaped the current policies and programs for resource use by analyzing + & - effects of building walls around slums in Brazil.

  2. Remember: Brazil has… • 4 Regions: • 1) Amazon River Basin • 2) Brazilian Highlands • 3) Northeast • 4) Southeast • Where are the highlands on this map?

  3. Brazilian Highlands • Highest, driest land in Brazil. • Location of Brasilia-capital of Brazil. • City population= 2.6 million • Country population= 191 Million • (Brasilia: planned city= controlled growth)

  4. Brasilia= Opposite of major cities in Southeast Region: **Unplanned, uncontrolled growth** Rio de Janeiro (14 million people) Sao Paolo (20 million people)

  5. Rank Populations: • Brasilia • Rio de Janeiro • Sao Paolo • How did cities like Rio and Sao Paolo get so big? • In the 1970’s millions of people began moving from rural areas (farms, rainforest) to cities =Urbanization

  6. In Brazil, urbanization led to... Favelas- Slums on located on the hillsides outside city centers. People move to cities with nothing ($, jobs). -Build a home wherever they can.

  7. In Rio, 19% of population lives in favelasLargest= Rocinha-250,000 people

  8. Favelas aren’t official parts of the city • -lack basic city services (electricity, sewers, education, hospitals) • Living in a favela provides you less opportunity to succeed ($$) than in more established neighborhoods. • Without opportunity, it’s hard to leave the favela. Without leaving the favela, it’s hard to have opportunity. You‘re trapped!

  9. Favelas stay poor. Nice neighborhood stay nice. • Brazil has the one of the largest gaps between rich people & poor people in the world.

  10. Many favelas= overrun with gangs & drugs. -Like Mexico, the government’s fighting back.

  11. Why would Brazil fight to want control its favelas?
