  5. The SS • Led by Heinrich Himmler • Administered political prisons and eventually the entire Holocaust

  6. Dachau • The first concentration camp was opened March 22, 1933 in Dachau, Germany (outside Berlin) • Originally built to house political prisoners

  7. March 1933 • Passed the Enabling Act • Suspended the constitution • All political parties except NSDAP outlawed • Local legislatures deprived of autonomy

  8. Organized Boycott • Nazis organized boycott of Jewish businesses, continued through the 1930s

  9. April 1933 • The Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service • Ousted all Jews and most anti-Nazi bureaucrats • Including teachers and university professors

  10. May 1933 Nazis hold large rallies to burn books written by Jews, intellectuals and political opponents
