TASK: Using a blank map: Label the countries & use a colored key to show which year they joined. • Treaty of Rome (1957) original signatories: • Benelux countries (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg), France, Germany and Italy. • Joined in January 1973: UK, Ireland (Eire) and Denmark • Joined in January 1981: Greece • Joined in January 1986: Spain and Portugal Joined in January 1995: Austria, Sweden and Finland (Norway held a referendum but the vote was 'No') 1st May 2004: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Cyprus, Hungary, Slovenia, Malta 1st January 2007:Romania, Bulgaria

  5. GNI per capita is Gross National Income per person • It is worked out by working out all the money a country has made in a year divided by the number of people that live in the country

Questions • What do you notice about the countries with a GNI of less than £10,000? • Where are they located (N S E or W of Europe?) • When did these countries join the EU • Which country has the highest GNI? • Which country has the lowest GNI? • What is the GNI of the UK? • What is the average GNI of a country in the EU? • Do you think it is better to live in a country with high or low GNI? Why?
