The Black Panther Party, established in Oakland, CA in 1966, arose from the ideals of "Black Power," driven by black nationalism to liberate African Americans and end police brutality. The Panthers organized free meal programs and educational initiatives, fostering racial pride and supporting prisoners' rights. However, their armed self-defense tactics led to violent confrontations with law enforcement. Notably, the 1969 Chicago Police Raid tragically exemplified the group's conflicts with authorities, showcasing the hyper-tension between the Panthers and law enforcement, largely unchecked by investigations.
