  2. I. The Election of 1800 • Federalists v. Democratic Republicans • President John Adams ran for reelection against Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr • The Democratic Republicans used the Alien and Sedition Acts to make Adams and the Federalists look bad. • They claimed they were saving America from oppression and monarchy.

  3. I. The Election of 1800 D. Jefferson and Burr both received 73 electoral votes E. Adams only got 65 electoral votes F. A tiebreaking vote had to be made in the House of Representatives to determine who would be president between Jefferson and Burr. • Thomas Jefferson ultimately won due to the help of Alexander Hamilton.

Party Platforms • Federalist Party Platform • Strong National Government • Favored a government run National Bank • Supported Britain in their war with France • Favored Lawyers , Merchants, Businessmen, Industrialists, Clergy, Wealthy class • Economy based on Manufacturing, Industry, and Shipping and trade. (Business)

Party Platforms • Democratic – Republican Party Platform. • Limited national government • Favored more power at the state level • Opposed a government run National Bank • Favored Farmers, Trades people, and the less wealthy working class • Supported France in their war with Britain due to Frances cause: liberty • Favored an Economy based on Farming

Presidency of Thomas Jefferson • Thomas Jefferson became the 3rd president of the United State when he took office in 1801 • Jefferson sought to undo many Federalist Programs • He put and end to the Alien and Sedition Acts • He cut taxes including the tax on Whiskey • He reduced the size of the Army • He paid down government debt

Judicial Review is established while Jefferson was in office • The principle of Judicial Review says that the Supreme Court has the final say in interpreting the Constitution. • Chief Justice John Marshall established this principle D. Marbury v. Madison • Marbury v. Madison was the court case that helped establish the principle of Judicial review

Presidency of Thomas Jefferson • President Jefferson . . . • made the Louisiana Purchase which doubled the size of the United State • Jefferson Purchased the Louisiana Territory from Napoleon • sent the Lewis and Clark Expedition (the Corps of Discovery) to learn about the land just purchased. • Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led a group called the Corps of Discovery to explore the newly acquired territory • One of the main goals of the expedition was to find an all water route to the Pacific Ocean.
