Timeline 1862- Abbe Giovanna Caselli becomes the first person to transmit a still image using wires by inventing the Pantelegraph. 1873- It was revealed that it is possible to transform images into electronic signals. 1877- George Carey makes drawings for his invention called the selenium camera that would allow people to see by electricity. 1880- Thomas Edison and Alexander Bell theorize telephone devices that transmit images and sound.

  3. Timeline Continued 1881- Sheldon Bidwell experiments with Edison and Bell’s theory. 1884- Paul Nipkow sends images over wires.

  4. Timeline Continued 1906- Lee de Forest invents a way to amplify signals. 1907- Campbell Swinton and Boris Rosing suggest a new way to transmit images. 1923- Vladimir Zworkin patents his TV Camera tube based on Swinton’s ideas.

  5. Timeline Continued 1924- Charles Jenkins and John Baird each demonstrates mechanical images over circuit wires. 1926- John Baird operates television system with 30 lines of resolution. 1927- The U.S Department of Commerce conducts the first long distance use of television.

  6. Timeline Continued 1928- The Federal Radio Commission issues the first television station license. 1929- Vladimir Zworkin demonstrates an electronic system that can be used for transmission. 1930- Charles Jenkins broadcasts the first TV commercial

  7. Timeline Continued 1933- Iowa State University starts broadcasting weekly television programs. 1936- About 200 are in use world-wide 1937- CBS begins it’s TV development

  8. Timeline Continued 1939- Vladdimir Zworkin and RCA conduct experimental broadcast. 1940- Peter Goldmark invents black and white color resolution. 1943- Zwordin invents a better camera tube called the Orthicon.

  9. Timeline Continued 1948- Cable television is introduced to Pennsylvania. 1950- The FCC approves of the first color television. 1956- Ampex introduces a practical videotape system.

  10. Timeline Continued 1960- First split screen broadcast 1962- AT&T launches the first satellite to carry TV broadcasts. 1967- Most TV broadcasts are now in color

  11. Timeline Continued 1984- Stereo TV broadcasts approved 1986- Super VHS introduced 1993- Closed captioning required on all TV sets. 1996- FCC approves of HDTV
