Pre-1930’s The really earlyyears • 1899: Marconi demonstrates wireless telegraph in the US • 1906: Fessenden sends first program of music and speech • 1907: Forest broadcasts synthesized music and opera • # of radio stations: 1922-30, 1923-556 • 1926: Mr. Baird produces first television transmission between rooms • Late 1920’s: Experimentation with television broadcasting initiated

  3. 1930’s The earlyyears • Radiolympia (London) & Berlin Radio Exhibition • Television consisted of separate audio and visual units • Countries worldwide perfect television; number of TVs in the public are limited • Halloween 1938: Orson Welles reads War of the Worlds on live radio • 1939: American electronic television launched

  4. 1940’s World War II • Worldwide calamity halts release of TV • 7” TVs selling for $300 ($3,300 in today’s money) • Projection television first marketed • Development of color television begins • Cathode ray tube replaces scanning disc • 1949: 940,000 households own a TV

  5. 1950’s The Television Boom • Radio, movies, and restaurants hit hard by boom of television • “Today” and “Tonight” shows debut • “I Love Lucy”: the show of shows • Quiz show scandals rock industry • Soap operas: the housewives' fantasy world • 1st presidential campaign televised. • 1953: 20 million households own a TV

  6. 1960’s Social Integration • 1967: Congress establishes Corporation for Public Broadcasting… • 1969: Congress establishes Public Broadcasting System (PBS) • Most popular television set – the Kuba de Luxe Radio-TV-Combination • “Star Trek” and “Batman” first air • End of live productions of TV shows • Appalachia Educational Laboratory sets out to find effects of preschool-to-high-school instruction by television

  7. 1970’s Cultural Identity • TV brings realities of war home. • Birth of Saturday morning cartoons • Sesame Street debuts • “Roots”- A miniseries for the record books • “All In The Family” - just as popular as it was controversial • Watergate scandal televised.

  8. 1980’s Continuing on… • Cable TV arrives; ABC, NBC, and CBS lose their monopoly • CNN and FOX founded • Remote control developed • Premier of many shows: “Cheers,” “The Cosby Show,” “Magnum P.I.,” “Family Ties” etc. • “Star Wars” trilogy continues • Beginning of image-oriented entertainment

  9. 1990’s TV: The Family Activity • More and more options to watch • Advent of primetime cartoon sitcoms • Longest running sitcom – “The Simpsons” • Talk shows dominate daytime TV • Increasing violence - parents concerned • Top Emmy award winners of the 90’s – “Fraiser,” “Picket Fences,” “The Practice,” “Late Show with David Letterman”

Ginsburg demonstrates the first video tape recorder • 1963: Ampex releases “Signature V” • 1975: Sony launches first consumer-based video tape recorder • 1976: JVC introduces “Video Home System” (VHS) • 1972: Atari Pong arcade game debuts • 1985: Premier of “Nintendo Entertainment System”
