  2. Do Now • What are some ways you find out about upcoming movies?

Movie Posters • Big movies are a huge business, as the recent success of films such as Transformersand Harry Potter suggests. • Billion-dollar revenue figures aren’t all that uncommon today in cinema, placing many major movies alongside companies such as Facebook when it comes to revenue. • With so much riding on a film’s success, marketing one is a massive opportunity for creative designers. • One of the tools of marketing is movie posters. • Movie posters are one part of a marketing package meant to entice you into seeing the movie

  4. Elements of Movie Posters • Attention – jump out from the wall. • Grabbing the attention of passers-by and encouraging them to look.

  5. Iconography – showing without telling • The most effective movie posters are iconic, presenting the themes in the film without resorting to flat out saying what it’s about.

  6. Interest – create an incentive to see the film • Using an image that provides viewers with an idea of the story is a great idea.

  7. Appeal – create desire with fans and non-fans alike. • With studios creating movies based on comic books, you want to attract both fans and non-fans

  8. Style – a look that’s consistent with the film • Poster matches the style of the movie

  9. Recognizability – if it’s a sequel, make it obvious

  10. Design of movie posters • What information should a movie poster contain? • What kind of language should it use to make people want to see the movie? • How do colors affect mood? How should colors relate to the movie? • What colors should be used for romance, comedy, action/adventure or dark movies?

Midterm Project • Using your knowledge of Photoshop you are going to create 5 movie posters • The movie posters can be movies that have been made or you can be creative and create your own movie titles and posters • Each movie poster must contain at least 5 layers • Each poster needs the following: • The title of the movie • The names of the stars of the movie • Pictures depicting the movie • * Bonus credit will be given if you incorporate your own likeness into the poster
