  3. Why do we need to use blended learning? • Integrates technology with content and instruction • Promotes collaborative learning • Learning isn’t just limited to the classroom

How did we get here? • Technology-based training using mainframes and mini-computers • Satellite-based live video • CD-ROMs used for following online students, especially in the Aviation training area • Web-based training, virtual classroom, e-learning • Webcasting, web 2.0, simulations, and more

  5. Who were the innovators? • 1963 • University of Illinois and Control Data • Introduced PLATO (Programmed Logic for Automatic Teaching Operations) • Problem – mainframes not interesting

  6. 1970s – 1980s • Stanford University • Introduced Interactive TV network • courses taught throughout the San Francisco Bay area through live video

  7. Still utilized today with companies such as General Motors • Problem - expense

  8. 1990s • CBT Systems • Boeing Airlines • CD-ROM • Distribution of programs using video, audio, and interactions • Problem – transfer to the web wasn’t practical

  11. HISTORY OF BLENDED LEARNING Blended learning has been around for quite a while, even before computers and social networks. Teachers have used blended learning through the use of paper and pencil.

  12. Teachers have used various activities with the reinforcement of learning materials; such as apprenticeships which encompassed observations, conversations and even readings.

  13. Blended learning began in 1840 with the first correspondence school in Europe • It then progressed to the Chautauqua (correspondence) institute in New York • In 1910, blended learning was established in Pennsylvania at the International Correspondence School

  14. The first use of the concept blended learning was used in 1999 (without technology).

  15. The EPIC, formerly known as the Interactive Learning Centers, began offering Internet courses using the company’s Blended Learning methodology.
