  4. Imports • Pottery • Wine • Olive Oil • Coins first made- 600s B.C.E.

  5. Citizenship- City-States • Polis- city-state- a tiny independent country • Acropolis main gathering place- on top of hill- religious center- temples there • Agora- below acropolis- marketplace and meeting place to debate issues • Different sizes • Athens- 300,000 people (500 B.C.E.) • Most were smaller

  6. Greek Citizen • Members of a political community • Treat each other as equals • Have rights & responsibilities • Greeks- 1st people to have idea of citizenship • Only free men who owned land were citizens • Women later became citizens-no rts.

  7. Citizens • Choose officials & pass laws • Right to vote • Hold office • Own property • Defend themselves in court • Responsibilities- serve in govt. & • fight for polis as citizen soldier

  8. Hoplites • Armies of ordinary citizens • Fought on foot • Heavily armed • Round shield • Short sword • 9’ spear • Marched together- shields like a wall
