This document outlines the development and current status of an online feedback system initiated by Fergus McGlynn at the University of York. It details the project's history, including pilot trials and user feedback collection across various departments. Key features of the system include administrative time-saving capabilities, access control, and support for anonymity in responses. Challenges such as low student engagement and perceived lack of impact on feedback will also be discussed. Future directions involve further refinement and departmental support for wider implementation.

Overview • Where we’ve been • Where we are now • Where we’re going • Key features of the system • Key issue – response rate • Demonstration
Where we’ve been • Pilot online feedback system • Steering group formed • Departmental and student surveys conducted – elicit requirements • Prototype developed – refined into system specification • System design and implementation
Where we’ve been (cont) • Initial user trials conducted • Psychology department • Computing service • Further refinement on system • Full user trials conducted • Biology department • Maths department • Politics department
Where we are now • Implementation complete • Collecting feedback from trials • Technical documentation of system
Where we’re going • Refine system further if necessary • Publicise/advertise system to departments • Release system to departments and provide support • Maintenance/further development (?)
Key features • Administrative time saving • Distributing, collecting, processing, class time • Access control • Anonymity • Archiving / storage
Issue – Response Rate • Most departments seem to want a high one… but… • Many students state a lack of enjoyment in the feedback exercise • Many students claim to not have a strong opinion • Many students feel that their responses are not taken seriously • Mechanisms to help
