And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.” Jeremiah 31:31-33

  8. Three passages which serve as our text for today • Mark 14:36 • Romans 8:14-17 • Galatians 4:6

  9. Why does God want an intimate, family relationship with us? • God, why do You tolerate us? • Because I am your Father and you are my child.

  10. God has adopted you as His child “For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’” Romans 8:15

  11. Definitions • υἱοθεσία,ας- adoption; sonship • υἱοθεσία, ας- adoption; used in the NT as a legal technical term but in a metaphorical sense: 1) of God’s acceptance of the nation of Israel as his chosen people (Rom. 9.4) 2) of the sonship status bestowed on those who believe in Christ (Gal. 4.5) • Adoption- placed in a position and rights as one’s own child; sonship (Rom. 8:15)

  12. Roman adoption (Patria Potestas) • The adopted got a new father. • He became heir to his new father’s estate. • The old life of the adopted person was completely wiped out. • In the eyes of the law he was absolutely the son of his new father.

  13. Intimacy and the Spirit • It is the work of the Holy Spirit to bring us closer to God and God’s likeness. • Three things attributed to the Holy Spirit in this passage: • “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God” • We have received “the Spirit of adoption” • “The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God”
