  1. Soil and manure testing Amber Moore, Ph.D. University of Idaho

  2. Managing nutrients…Soil testing • Collected to represent Conservation Management Unit • Time allowed between sampling and planting (Code 590) • Within 3 months for NO3-N and NH4-N • Within 9 months for P, pH, OM, free lime, and EC

  3. Conservation Management unit

  4. Soil sampling – How many?

  5. Soil sampling - Depth • For all parameters • One foot depth • Greatest abundance of plant roots • Largest concentration of nutrients • For mobile nutrients (Nitrogen, Sulfur, and Boron) • One foot increments to rooting depth

  6. Soil testing - lab analysis • Double/triple check results at multiple labs, both government and private • Stay in your region • Soil test methods change depending on general soil characteristics • Example – Soil test P • Mehlich III method for acid soils, Olsen method for alkaline soils • Calcareous soils in our region • Utilize labs in Idaho, Nevada, Utah, Montana, Wyoming, Eastern Washington, Eastern Oregon

  7. Managing nutrients…Manure testing • Manure testing is crucial – variability too great • Test before every growing season

  8. Labs that test manure • Must be NAPT-MAP or NAPT-CAP approved • http://ghex.colostate.edu/map/ • Stuckenholtz laboratory – Twin Falls, ID • USU Analytical Lab. – Logan UT

  9. Taking a representative manure sample • Manure and Wastewater Sampling • Sheffield and Norell • Lagoon, compost, stockpile sampling • http://info.ag.uidaho.edu/pdf/CIS/CIS1139.pdf
