  1. The French and Indian War 1754-1763

  2. Power struggles between England and France for world power extended into the colonies. • Both sides had Native American unions, or alliances.

  3. Ben Franklin gives the war the name, French and Indian War, because the British were fighting off two enemies… • The French and the Indians.

  4. Early on the French had many victories, Due their use of the Native American fighting style.

  5. British use of marching into combat was not conducive to fighting in the frontier. • Colonists did not have the aid of the English.

  6. Fighting in the colonies helped start a new war in Europe, • Known as the Seven Years War. • Britain declares war on France in 1756.

  7. The first year was disastrous for the British. • Prospects improve for the British, as William Pitt becomes Sect. of State and Prime Minister for Great Britain.

  8. Pitt declares • That Great Britain would pay for everything no matter what the cost.

  9. This leaves Great Britain in enormous debt. • After the war, Britain raises taxes of the colonies to pay off the debt.

  10. 1759 brought many British victories. • War ends with Treaty of Paris, 1763 • France would keep some of its sugar producing colonies in the West Indies, but was forced to give up all of Canada, and lands east of the Mississippi. These lands were given to Great Britain.

  11. Treaty marked the end of France as a power in North America.

  12. Native Americans • Natives regarded British as enemies. • Fighting breaks out between the Natives and British. This series of raids is known as Pontiacs War.

  13. To prevent more fighting, King George III, issues the Proclamation of 1763 • This sets the Appalachian Mtns. As a temporary boundary for the colonists.

  14. This angers many colonists that have already purchased land west of the Appalachian Mtns. • It’s only just begun …..
