  1. Library lingo 1 • AskAway is a live chat reference service. Look for the icon on the library home page. • ASRS is the automated storage and retrieval system in IKBLC. To retrieve an item, click on Place Request in the library catalogue and select ASRS Request. See: http://www.library.ubc.ca/home/asrs/how-to/ • Boolean Operators: AND is used to narrow your search. OR is used to expand your search. i.e. (colds OR flus) and vitamin c • Catalogue tells you what the library has, e.g. books, journals, proceedings, reports, videos, maps, etc. • cIRcle is a digital archive for research and teaching materials created by the UBC community including theses and dissertations.

  2. Library lingo 2 • CISTI Orders is a free delivery service for books and articles that are not available at UBC. See: http://www.library.ubc.ca/info/pegasus.html • Index is a finding aid to search the journal literature of a particular discipline or subject. They sometimes also include the full-text of the articles. • Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a free delivery service for books and articles that are not available at UBC or CISTI. See: http://horsefly.library.ubc.ca/cgi-bin/borrowing.pl?START • My Library Account is where you can renew books, check due dates, fines, recalls, document delivery and ILL requests, change PIN, etc. See: http://www.library.ubc.ca/home/libaccount.html • Recall is when someone has a book and you want to borrow it next. Click on Place Request in the library catalogue and select Recall.

  3. Library lingo 3 • Reference has at least 3 meanings in the context of a library! Books on reference cannot be borrowed. A reference librarian or reference desk is where you can get help. A reference can also be a citation at the end of a paper. • RefWorks is a Web-based bibliographic citation manager that allows you to create your own personal database of references by importing citations from online databases and other sources. The references can then be formatted into footnotes and bibliographies for papers. • Reserve materials are heavily used and therefore have short loan periods (e.g. 2 hours or 1 day). • Subject headings are controlled vocabulary used to identify the major subject matter of a work. They are used to help find relevant results. • Subject guides are web pages with links to useful resources and a good place to begin your research.   4. Library lingo 4 • Truncation/Wildcards are an efficient way to find the singular and plural and other variations on your search terms. Enter the first part of the word - the prefix - and add the truncation or wildcard symbol suffix. The truncation/wildcard symbol is usually * • UBC Document Delivery is a delivery service for books and articles at UBC. Delivery is free between campuses. See: http://www.library.ubc.ca/home/docdel.html • UBC eLink: searches for the full text from the Library's collection and tells you whether the full text is online or in print. In most indexes and databases you will see the eLink icon next to a citation. • UBC Okanagan (UBC-O) is a library in Kelowna, 5 hours away from Vancouver. • VPN/myVPN/Library Proxy are your ways of accessing the electronic Library resources from off-campus.
