  3. The Spin Hall Effect • Predicted in 1971, named in 1999 • No requirement for an external magnetic field • Anomalous Hall Effect (AHE) • DSHE • ISHE • Originates in the Spin-Orbit Interaction (Too complicated)

  4. Applications • Spin Transfer Torque • Spin Detection • Spin/Current conversion • Much more

  5. Spin Transfer Torque • Modifying the orientation of magnetical layers • STT-RAM • Better than MRAM • β-Ta & β-W

  6. Spin Detection • Using ISHE • Highly dependant on materials • DSHE materials such as Pl, Pd and Cu not good enough. • Efficiency of detection • ρC – Electrical Resistivity • αSH – Spin Hall Angle • ρSH ≈ ρC αSH – Spin Hall Resistivity • Metal Oxides, IrO2

  7. Spin/Current conversion • Using ”self induced” ISHE • Spin Ni80Fe20 ”Battery” • 1) Apply magnetic field • 2) Recieve current.

  8. Summary • Metals important in spintronics due to their magnetic properties. • The Spin Hall Effect gives us incredible control over spin/current detection and conversion • Many memory and energy applications
