  3. Diffusion • Diffusion- Movement of molecules from HIGH concentrations to LOW concentrations • Ex: • Aerosol spray • Water and food coloring

  4. Facilitated Diffusion • Diffusion with the help of a membrane channel protein • Ex. • Everyone UP!

  5. Osmosis • Diffusion of water across a membrane • Only water moves across membranes, not other materials • If there are more salts/sugars, then there are fewer water molecules • 3 types of solutions: • Hypertonic • Hypotonic • Isotonic

  6. Hypertonic Solution • Water moves OUT of a cell… cell shrivels up • Hypertonic = water = salt

  7. Hypotonic Solution • Water moves INTO a cell… cell swells up • Hypotonic = water = salt

  8. Isotonic Solution • Water moves EQUALLY (iso) into and out of a cell • No net movement = water = salt

  9. Active Transport • Energy used to force molecules from LOW concentrations to HIGH concentrations • Protein Pumps • Endocytosis • Phagocytosis and Pinocytosis

  10. Protein Pumps • A membrane protein that uses ATP to pump molecules from low to high High ATP Low ADP P

  11. Endocytosis • Taking in large materials using vesicles • Phagocytosis- taking in food particles • Pinocytosis- taking in liquid particles Exocytosis • Expelling large materials using vesicles
