  1. B L SBASIC LIFE SUPPORT

  2. An NGO started on Feb 17 2010 dedicated to • Spreading the wings of emergency care in Kerala • Spreading awareness of life saving skills • Networking hospitals, govt. organisations, corporates, ambulance services to deliver prompt emergency services to the deserving & • Gearing up the state for disaster management

  3. MEANING OF B LS • B- BASIC - what any man or woman can do (not necessarily a health care professional) • LS - LIFE SUPPORT – actions done with the aim of prolonging life of a dying person (till he reaches a point of definitive care)

  4. Concepts of BLS

  5. Lets answer these questions • What is the most common cause of death? • Which is the most vital organ of the body? • What is CPR? • When to start CPR? • What is the chain of survival? • What are the components of chain of survival?

  6. MOST COMMON Cause of Death Cardiovascular diseases (82%) Especially cardiac arrest 75% happen at home What is the most common cause of death? Which is the most vital organ of the body? What is CPR? When to start CPR? What is the chain of survival? What are the components of chain of survival? 95% die before reaching hospital

  7. Organs of Human Body BRAIN LUNGS HEART LIVER SPLEEN INTESTINES

  8. Vital Organs of Human Body BRAIN LUNGS HEART

  9. MOST Vital Organ of Human Body BRAIN What is the most common cause of death? Which is the most vital organ of the body? What is CPR? When to start CPR? What is the chain of survival? What are the components of chain of survival?

  10. What do we mean by vital organs ? • Oxygenated blood circulation is essential to keep all organs in the body alive • Of all the organs in the human body, the heart and the lungs are the vital organs to maintain oxygenated blood circulation. • Of all the organs receiving oxygenated blood circulation the brain is the most vital organ since • It is the master controller of the body • It is the least tolerant organ to decreased circulation

  11. Once blood circulation in the body STOPS, Brain death occurs in 4 – 6 minutes CPR maintains blood circulation to vital organs Delaying CPR decreases chance of survival by 10% every minute C P R Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation HEART LUNGS What is the most common cause of death? Which is the most vital organ of the body? What is CPR? When to start CPR? What is the chain of survival? What are the components of chain of survival? Knowing CPR could save a loved one

  12. What is C P R ? • Cardio pulmonary resuscitation means to bring back a dying person to life by maneuvers to make the heart and lungs work. • In simple terms it means giving external chest compressions to simulate the heart pump and giving external breaths to supply air to lungs In a specific sequence

  13. When to start C P R ? • IMMEDIATELY • Once the blood circulation in the body stops, the brain is the first organ to DIE. (within 4-6 min) • So CPR must be started immediately • Delaying CPR decreases chances of survival by 10% every minute • If CPR is delayed for 2 minutes chance of survival is 80% • If CPR is delayed for 10 minutes chance of survival is 0% • SO BEGIN CPR IMMEDIATELY

  14. Chain of survival • The strength of a chain lies in its rings & links • Rings refer to the life saving actions of the rescuer • Links refer to the interval period between the actions. This interval must be short. Planning for the next action while performing one action will shorten this period

  15. ADULT Chain of SURVIVAL CALL FOR HELP CARDIAC CARE CPR PRE HOSPITAL CARE DEFIBRILLATE What is the most common cause of death? Which is the most vital organ of the body? What is CPR? When to start CPR? What is the chain of survival? What are the components of chain of survival?

  16. Chain of survival • The adult chain of survival refers to the most important steps of BLS which must be executed systematically, sequentially & correctly • The strength of the ring of the chain refers to the correctness of each action. • The strength of each link lies in the rescuer’s familiarity with the action to be performed and the avalability of the necessary equipment and manpower. • The next slide shows sequence of actions

  17. UNRESPONSIVE NO BREATHING GASPING CALL FOR HELP GET AED E D CHECK PULSE ANALYSE & SHOCK C P R

  18. Components of BLS training

  19. Components of BLS training Know WHAT TO DO when someone COLLAPSES • Initiating chain of survival • Performing good CPR for adult, child, infant • Initiating use of AED early enough • Providing good rescue breaths • Practising 2 rescuer team CPR • Releiving choking

  20. Teaching aids • Power point presentations on each action (10-15min each) • Manikins (one for 10-12 trainees) • Demonstrations of each action by skilled trainers • Practice sessions (30-45min each) • Interactive teaching with the defibrillator • Question and answer sessions. TIME REQUIRED 5 hrs ADEQUATE SPACE required for presentations & skills demonstrations preferably in the same hall ATTENDANCE per batch minimum 30 upto 100

  21. Remember this… • To help a dying person these life saving skills must be mastered by one and all. • To help a dying person these life saving skills must be utilised for him at the earliest. • To help a dying person we must train ourselves first and then train others too. • With these noble objectives ANGELS intends to help you help yourself and your society

  22. Thank you
