The New Deal • Originally a vague campaign promise • Three pronged approach • Deal with financial crisis and short term emergency job relief • Promote industrial recovery through massive government spending & regulation and cooperative agreement • Increase farm incomes by increasing commodity prices

  4. POLICIES AND EXPERIMENTS • Emergency Banking & Relief Act – regulated banking, restored confidence • Fireside chats – radio addresses to explain policies to average citizens • 21st Amendment – repealed Prohibition • FCA – Farm Credit Administration, lower interest loans to farmers • HOLC – Urban loans (originally Hoover’s idea) • FDIC – insured bank accounts • CCC – Civilian Conservation Corps – jobs for men 18-25 • CWA – civil works administration • (1935) WPA – Works Progress Administration – replaced FERA (federal emergency relief) • NRA – National Recovery Agency Crash Course: New Deal
