Curriculum Mapping for the Common Core Standards O. Nesi – I.S. 281 Library Spring Conference May 18, 2011
This Sounds Oddly Familiar…(Finding the Overlap Between CCS and IFC) Please complete the Do Now: • CCS Handout • IFC Phases & Indicators
At First … Mostly Fear & Denial • 2009-2010 – 7th and 8th Grade ELA curriculum mapping for uniformity • Summer 2010 CCS workshops • Straw grab materials reaction • “We’ve got until 2014…”
Then … The Realizations: • Ordering and “dumping” of materials would not be enough • The extent of the paradigm shift • The amount of work involved
The Fall Saturday Workshop • Consider the “tasks” • We’ve known this all along • Fixing the task is not enough • “Fixed” tasks should inform instruction
The 6th Grade ELA Work Begins(With CCS still off in the distance, we work hard to make some missteps) • Lead teacher meetings to verbalize and plan to address dissatisfaction • Development of ELA Survey • Development of Resources Used survey
The Epiphany • Uniformity of curriculum will not necessarily equal CCS implementation • Goal Merging: As long as we want both uniformity and CCS, why not address both issues at once?
The Sites • Common Core • A curriculum mapping site: http://commoncore.org/maps/index.php/maps/grades/ • We may not have to completely re-invent the wheel after all
Think, Turn and Talk Directions • Check all that apply on the Think Turn & Talk handout • Be sure to provide brief explanations where necessary • Turn to a neighbor and talk it out
Site Format • Essential Question and Overview • Focus Standards • Student Objectives • Suggested Works • Sample Activities and Assessments • Additional Resources
A Plan … • Structured Explorations • Resource lists for the units/FAMIS • Folders of printable resources • Two meetings per week to hammer it out
In the Future • Continue work on 6th Grade unit plans • Re-do 6th Grade book room • Same general plan for 7th Grade next year • 8th Grade the year after that
