  1. The Common Core Standards Full implementation by the fall of 2014

What are the Common Core State Standards? • Standards are clear, consistent guidelines reflecting what students need to learn. • Standards expect students to acquire a greater depth of knowledge and skills. • Standards are the skills and knowledge students need to be successful in college and at work.

  3. What the standards are not • The standards are not a federal mandate. • The standards will not prevent different levels of achievement among students. • The standards are not a curriculum.

  4. Why do we need Common standards? • To ensure consistent content delivery and expectations between states. • To ensure students are globally competitive by exposing them to standards used throughout the world. • To improve equity and economic opportunity for all students. • To clarify standards and expectations for parents, teacher and students. • To ensure greater resources, expertise, materials, curriculum materials and professional development among states.

  5. What you will notice Instructionally Math • Focus • Coherence • Procedural fluency • Deep conceptual understanding • Balanced emphasis English Language Arts • Increased informational text • Text complexity • Academic vocabulary • Reading in all areas • Reference to multiple sources

  6. Understanding the standards Reading Standards for Literature Grade 3 students: CCSS.ELA.Literacy.RL.3 Key Ideas and Details • Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.

  7. Understanding the standards Kid Friendly Language “I Can ask and answer questions about a text by going back to find my answers.”

  8. Understanding the standards Reading Standards for Literature Grade 8 students: CCSS.ELA.Literacy.RL.8 Key Ideas and Details: • Cite the textual evidence that most strongly supports an analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.

  9. Understanding the standards Kid Friendly Language “I can identify significant literary devices in a writer’s style and use those elements to interpret the text.” “I can analyze the relevance of the setting (place, time, customs) to the mood, tone, and meaning of the text.”
