The Common Core Standards Full implementation by the fall of 2014
What are the Common Core State Standards? • Standards are clear, consistent guidelines reflecting what students need to learn. • Standards expect students to acquire a greater depth of knowledge and skills. • Standards are the skills and knowledge students need to be successful in college and at work.
What the standards are not • The standards are not a federal mandate. • The standards will not prevent different levels of achievement among students. • The standards are not a curriculum.
Why do we need Common standards? • To ensure consistent content delivery and expectations between states. • To ensure students are globally competitive by exposing them to standards used throughout the world. • To improve equity and economic opportunity for all students. • To clarify standards and expectations for parents, teacher and students. • To ensure greater resources, expertise, materials, curriculum materials and professional development among states.
