  2. Don’t forget • Your midterm will be broken into TWO DAYS. • Part 1 = CHAPTER 1 = 10/15 (Tuesday) • Part 2 = CHAPTER 2 = 10/17 (Thursday) • You will have a MAXIMUM of 75 minutes for each part of the midterm. No exceptions.

  3. For Whatever reason, We like to make problems like these harder than they actually are…Example Problem 3 • An angry bird, accelerating from rest at a constant rate, experiences a displacement of 50m in 10s. What is the average velocity of the bird?

  4. Using the Kinematics EquationsExample Problem 4 • A rock is thrown straight downward with an initial velocity of 20 m/s from a cliff. What is the rock’s displacement after 3.0s?

  5. Using graphical analysis Example Problem 5 • Teddy thinks it would be fun to steal a box of ballpoint pens from Mr. Cunnings upon leaving class Friday. However, Teddy doesn’t expect the nimble Terry Tate (hallway linebacker) to catch him in the act! Running at full speed down a very long hallway, Terry Tate can run at a top speed of approximately 30mph, while Teddy can run at a top speed of 20 mph. If both Teddy and Terry are running at full speed at t = 0, with Teddy 80 feet ahead, how long does it take for Terry Tate to catch Teddy and tackle him?

  6. Example Problem 6A “Dumb” speeding dog van… • Lloyd and Harry, traveling at a constant speed of 45m/s, pass a police trooper on a motorcycle hidden behind a billboard. One second after their speeding “dog van” passes the billboard, the trooper sets out to pull them over, accelerating at a constant rate of 3.0 m/s/s. How long does it take the trooper to pull even with Lloyd and Harry?

  7. Example Problem 7Getting up to speed… • Smoky boldly claims that his Trans-Am Convertible can accelerate at a constant rate, from rest to 75mph, in just 5 seconds. If so, what is the acceleration of his car in m/s2

  8. Example 8You’re Pushing It! • A ball is pushed with an initial velocity of 7.0 m/s. The ball rolls down a hill with a constant acceleration of 3.1 m/s2. The ball reaches the bottom of the hill in 10.0s. What is the velocity of the ball at the bottom of the hill?

  9. Celebrate good times, c’mon!Example 9-10 (multiple examples) • At the edge of a cliff 100m high, Mr. Farrell is grading quarter tests. After Joe scores a perfect 100% on his Pre-Calculus midterm exam, Mr. Farrell celebrates by throwing his spherically-shaped stainless steel coffee thermos straight upward with a velocity of 50 m/s. How much later would Mr. Farrell have to drop a super-sized sugar cube from rest so that both the thermos and the sugar cube arrive simultaneously at the bottom of the cliff? Neglect air resistance, and use g = 9.8 m/s2.

  10. So let me ask you this… • Considering Farrell’s thermos and sugar cube, what is the position of the thermos when Mr. Farrell drops his sugar cube?! • What is the velocity of Farrell’s thermos when the sugar cube is dropped?
