  1. Natural Resources Earth Science

  2. Introduction • The Earth'sNatural resources are substances we obtain from the land, water, and air around us. • All of the products we use have a natural resource base. • Minerals, forest products, water, and soil are a few of the natural resources humans use to produce energy and make things people use. 3. Vocabulary • Renewable • Reproduced within a few years or decades. • Nonrenewable • Resource that cannot be replaced in our lifetime. • Inexhaustible • Resource that will never run out in our lifetime. • Replenish • Make complete again • Conservation • Protection, preservation, management, or restoration of natural resources. • Alternative • Choice of another resource to fulfill the same needs.

  5. Conceptual Activity • Where do our products come from? • Sample: • Design a chart: on one side list 10 things in your bed room. On the other write what they are made from. • Challenge: What are things recycled from? http://www.metrokc.gov/dnr/kidsweb/school_office.htm Apple Tree Apple Pie Wood Pencil & Paper

  6. Interactive • Read the information on http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/world/minerals.html • Dividing into groups, research one of the following minerals: • Coal • Copper • Iron • Diamond • Crude oil and natural gas • Potassium • Other minerals can be used if desired. • See next slide for instructions~

  7. Interactive continued • Using encyclopedias or the Internet, locate where reserves for each mineral can be found in the world. • Mark these areas on a world map. • What is the mineral is used for, and what country uses the mineral the most? • Try to find out how long known reserves are expected to last. Each group will report their findings.

  8. Critical Thinking • As a whole group, discuss what would happen if a particular mineral was no longer available. • Would the location of a particular mineral affect the availability of this mineral in the United States? (Example: we import most of our oil from Iran, what would we do if we went to war with them?) • What could we do to prepare for this need? • How could we avoid this situation?
