  3. Special Highway, Parkway, and Turnpike Conditions • Disabled Vehicle (yours) • Pull off as far as possible • Get out of door on non - traffic side • Turn on flashers • Raise the hood • Stay in vehicle and lock doors • Ask someone to call for help • Don’t get into a stranger’s vehicle

  4. Special Highway, Parkway, and Turnpike Conditions • Always stay alert for Construction-area warning signs • Toll Booths • Slow down • Green means open • EZ pass • When exiting expect to merge

  5. Curves • Adjust steering and speed because vehicles tend to go straight • Best way to enter a curve is to slow down and avoid drifting into another lane

  6. Right Turn on Red • You may turn on red if: • No signs posted • You come to a COMPLETE stop • Check for traffic: • You must yield to all oncoming traffic and pedestrians • Remember to look for bicycles and mopeds

  7. Right Turns • Do not swing into another lane

  8. Left Turns • Don’t Cut Corners • Two vehicles may make a left turn at the center of an intersection • Extra caution must be applied • When turning left from a two- way road onto a four-lane highway you much turn onto the lane closest to you that you are allowed to drive in

  9. Stopping Regulations • Signs, signals and traffic rules indicate when a motorist must stop • A Motorist should never try to beat a traffic light change • Most accidents at the traffic signals happen in the first few second after the light has changed

  10. Railroad Crossings • Warning devices include: • Pavement markings • Flashing lights • Gates • Bells • Flag signals • A motorist must stop at least 15 feet from railroad crossings when there is a train approaching • Never stop on railroad tracks

  11. School Buses • You must stop at least 25 Feet away (by state law) for a school bus with flashing red lights • You do not need to stop if a median separates the road but you must reduce your speed to 10mph • If a school bus has stopped directly in front of a school to pick up or let off children you may pass at a speed of no more than 10 mph

  12. Frozen Dessert Trucks • Stop; then proceed at no more than 15 mph

  13. Emergency Vehicles • NJ Law requires • motorists to yield to signaling (lights and sirens) emergency vehicles • Move to the right and stop till they pass • Stay 300 ft behind vehicle • DO NOT park within 200 ft of a fired department vehicle or drive over a fire hose unless directed to do so

  14. Move Over Law • NJ Law requires motorists approaching a stationary vehicle that is displaying flashing lights, must change lanes if possible

  15. Headlights • Headlights must be used • between ½ hour after sunset and ½ hour before sunrise • When using windshield wipers • Fog • Bright beams are for open- country road driving; no traffic • Dim beams are for city driving; driving in traffic; with other motorists

  16. Parking • It is illegal for a vehicle to be parked more than six inches from the curb

  17. Do Not Park • Between a safety zone for pedestrians and the adjacent curb or within 20 ft of the end of the safety zone • Within 10 ft of a fire hydrant • Within 25 ft of a cross walk at an intersection, or a side line of a street or intersection highway • Within 50 ft of railroad crossing • Within 50 ft of a stop sign • Within 20 ft of the driveway entrance to any fire station • Within 75 ft on the street opposite a fire station entrance

  18. Cell phones • State law prohibits the use of handheld electronic devices • Using a handheld cellular telephone or texting device is aprimary offense • Fine for breaking this law is between $100-$250 • A GDL motorist MAY NOT use a handheld or hands free device
