  2. Be patient! • Now we know how teachers and parents feel! • You are making a difference, no matter how small it may be!

  3. Introduce yourself! • Smile! • Tell the child or children your name. • Tell your audience something interesting about yourself!

  4. Pick a book the child will like! • Explain why you selected the book. • Practice reading it in front of a mirror!

  5. Explain why you are reading! • It’s important to learn how to read. • Reading is something you do for the rest of your life. • Reading needs practice!

  6. Introduce the Book! • Introduce the title, author, and illustrator. • Show the cover, illustrations, and ask key questions. • Answer children’s questions.

  7. Begin Reading! • Show enthusiasm, use inflection in your voice! • Get your audience’s attention. • Read slowly! • Ask key questions. • Predict endings for the story.

  8. After Reading! • Discuss the book! • Ask questions and encourage answers! (Did you like the book? Which character was your favorite? Did you like the ending? How would you change the ending?)

  9. Leave Smiling! • You’ve just done something wonderful!! • Feel good about it! • Next time you’ll do even better!
